Okay,

I realize these are fashion shots, but it did raise the question again (in my head) - if an abaya/jilbab doesn't close completely in the front, is it Qur'anic jilbab?

The woman in the fourth picture down, for instance. The coat is open at the bottom, and she's wear what appear to be tight pants. So...this wouldn't count, correct? She'd need a loose skirt on under the coat?

I'm just trying to see if I've understood this correctly. Thanks.

Amber: No, if the abaya is left open or has slits in it it is not jilbab unless one is not wearing a jilbab underneath of it. Then it has merely become part of a jilbab/ If they is no jilbab layer where the opening it, is has become a mere fashion accessory or cultural indicator.

Anonymous: Yes, of course, I feel the same, but if you are wearing khimar properly off the shoulder won't hurt you in the least. Not practical, but not harmful.

Some of these are super pretty. But sometimes I wonder if these designs are intended for the runway only or everyday use. I tried asking my guy what type of abaya is acceptable in Saudi and I was wearing a silky one with a bit of embroidery at the sleeves but overall really simple.

He said that was a bit extravagant and in all honesty anything other than subtle black embroidery would be too over the top and that expecting saudi girls to wear abayas like the ones posted on blogs is like expecting American girls to normally wear what they see at a Gucci show.

Majda: it really depends where you live. UAE, Oman, Kuwait.. you are fine... Jiddah even in some spaces but not all. In my husband's city a shoulder abaya in plain black with a little pink stripe at the wrist is okay with a boushiya---in the province of his friend an overhead abaya with no decoration is best. Where Aalia lives the only guidelines are a black shoulder abaya but is can be any fabric, cut, or have as much decoration as a girl wants. MOST of these are evening abayaat, worn to weddings or for special social occasions. Very few of them are the casual wear ones.

We really don't have any options in Austin. Houston and Dallas are wonderful though! Here you can either get them at the masjid or just hope a Arab sister is selling some. They're usually $40 and polyester. Ugh. Love you sis, will be coming by LOTS more often :)
OOOOoh so many pretty designs!

I love the red ones of course!!!

Still striving to find my perfect red accented abaya....

I hate those bagy sleeves that are like two people wide, how on earth do they do anything physically withtheir hands without smearing their sleeves with homos or baby poop or whatever...
So beautiful Masha'allah!
