HIJAB DON'T: the booty call

This was ACTUALLY a post request (from my husband.). Now you all know I love a good maxi dress the way you do. The coverage, the length, and its availability in the West (colour and selection is also great), it just has one great pitfall... it is often made of jersey.

Slinky stretch knits are a hijab don't. They might work as perfect hijab on the hanger and IF you don't move (IF you are a sister who is bedridden or paralyzed you can still work this), but as soon as you do MOVE, they cling to your thighs, and your butt, and the pretty indent of your waist, and not to mentions the breasts (your khimar/hijab should be covering that but if you-who-don't-follow THAT hijab basic, this trend tends to make you EVEN MORE clothed but naked.

The jersey maxi--- DON'T. The jersey tunic top---Don't.

Sister Kima from WELOVEHIJAB also did a post a long time ago about jersey tunic tops http://welovehijab.com/tag/hijab-dont/.

SubhanAllah I just got into it with a sister today about this same issue!! I think people think long+dress=success but really, it can be a fail, especially if jersey is in the equation subhanAllah, way too clingy of a fabric

No WONDER!
My only maxi dress in the closet is a blue jersey dress -.-; I wore it to Jummah last week and there happened to be a wind.... dang.

Anyway atleast I now know what (fabric) to not wear!

The fabric does make a big difference doesn't it? The stiffer cottons are so much better.

Salaam ukhti and I loved this post, masha'allah! I am so happy to see my sisters in Islam TRYING to observe hijab but too often it's a miss not a hit.

Also jersey isn't the only culprit. My fave sis and best friend had on a 2 layer polyester abaya and when she came out of her house...BAM! I could see her panty line like nobody's bizness. lol Of course she went back into change. A good lesson for us to do a quick "rear view" check before heading out! :-) Wasalaam,

Salaam Pixie

One time I wore a maxi dress over and it had the tight part in the middle. OH I was so embarressed because I went out and ALL the men were staring at me. I found out later on when I looked in a fulllength mirror that my waist and chest were actually ACCENTUATED by the tight part in the middle.

Never again. Never again!

I always wear a skirt under my maxi dress no matter what material. Did you guys never walk behind any woman with a maxi dress and too small panties? You can basically see all the shape of her behind - not only jersey maxis. Wear a very loose maxi skirt under, buy your dress in L even if you are a XS or S and you'll be fine.

i thot you sisters are wearing the abaya outside the meaxi, so what would be the problem?

Lazeena: yeah. The butt always ends up a major issue.

Modest Justice: usually stretchy stretchy fabrics are too clingy.

Stacy: I like chiffons:D But they cost more.

Sister Janah: Yeah, what's up with jilbab's being produced in stretch. Wahhh.

Selina: wa alaykom e salaam ramatullah wa barakto, yeah don't ya hate that? At least it looks good at home ya know? Like it wasn't a waste:D Just a strike out for hijab.

Mishmasha: I used to think that worked for me with jersey but my husband was right, when I moved, it was still too clingy on my thighs. But it might work in some cases to wear a (Non-clingy) fabric skirt over-top. But I prefer to buy a maxi that I can wear at home AND as hijab.

teachernur: wa alaykom e salaam ramatullah wa barakto,

not all of us. I wear abaya most of the time, but sometimes I wear an open abaya with a maxi dress under it (and some sisters where maxis with a very loose cardigan and khimar as make shift jilbab) and so it has to be loose enough to be overgarment. If it is a home garment and not a hijab item, it wouldn't matter. But in this case it does.

Assalamu alaikom,
I have a maxi-dress that I so love, and I wore it on a windy day and realized exactly what you're talking about. I don't watch myself in the mirror at home while I'm walking... I'm just standing there. So I honestly didn't realize until I caught my reflection in a store-front window. Oops. It'll be fine come cooler weather cuz I can wear something underneath. But until then... I'm outta luck!
